About Us:
Thornton's Tree Service is a reputable provider of professional tree care solutions throughout West Texas. With a focus on quality, safety, and customer satisfaction, we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional service to our clients. As we continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced NCCCO-certified Crane Operator to run our boom truck fleet on removals and commercial lift work.
Job Duties:
The Crane Operator is responsible for the safe operation of our boom trucks and the equipment supporting them, including but not limited to:
- Operating boom truck cranes for tree removals, working in coordination with climbers, riggers, and ground crew.
- Reading and applying load charts to determine pick capacity, radius, and configuration before every lift.
- Setting up the truck properly — site assessment, outrigger placement, cribbing, leveling, and identifying overhead and underground hazards.
- Maintaining minimum clearance distances from energized powerlines in accordance with OSHA requirements.
- Performing daily pre-operation inspections of the crane, wire rope, rigging, hooks, and truck; reporting deficiencies promptly.
- Operating support equipment as needed, including mini skid loaders, compact track loaders, and articulated loaders such as the L28.
- Safely transporting the crane and other company equipment to and from job sites.
- Communicating clearly with the crew lead and signal person throughout each lift.
- Assisting the crew with rigging, cleanup, and general tree work between picks.
- Performing routine maintenance and greasing on assigned equipment.
Working Conditions: This position entails working in environments that may be loud, dirty, and subject to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, wet, or dry conditions. Work is performed in residential yards, commercial properties, and occasional confined-access sites. Travel within our service area is required, with occasional overnight travel.
Job Details & Qualifications:
- Current NCCCO certification required (Telescopic Boom – Fixed Cab / TSS or equivalent). Candidates with strong crane experience who are not yet certified may be considered, with certification completed at company expense.
- Class B CDL required; Class A strongly preferred.
- Valid DOT medical card and ability to pass a DOT physical and pre-employment drug screen.
- Clean motor vehicle record; MVR will be reviewed.
- Demonstrated ability to read and apply load charts independently.
- Experience operating mini skid loaders, compact track loaders, and articulated loaders (L28 or similar) is preferred.
- Prior tree care experience is a strong plus; crane removal work is not the same as setting steel, and we value operators who understand rigging dynamic loads out of a tree.
- Consistency and punctuality are essential; candidates must demonstrate a reliable attendance record.
- All candidates will undergo a background check as part of the hiring process.
- No parole or probation reporting.
- Opportunities for overtime pay at time and a half may be available on a weekly basis.
- Strong work ethic and ability to collaborate effectively with team members are highly valued.
Benefits:
- Health, Dental, Vision.
- 401k matching after 6 months employment.
- Paid major holidays.
- PTO after 1 year employment.
- Company-paid NCCCO recertification.
- Opportunity for growth within the company.
How to Apply: If you possess the right work ethic and are committed to delivering quality service while working well with others, we invite you to apply.
